La Musica

so my friend, The Hil, and I were talking today about friends and music. We were wondering if you hang out with people with whom you have similar music tastes. Is that what defines us to an extent? Music tastes vary from person to person and so do personalities, soooooo, does that mean we pick friends subconsciously based on music? Is that possible? AND do certain personality types listen to certain types of music so then we can tell by music tastes alone who we will relate to more?? These are fun questions. Feel free to let me know your observations because this is just a start.

Not at all. We tend to appreciate those with similar tastes, but for different reasons - they tend to pick different bits and pieces about what you already love, y'know, maybe something you didn't notice about a song or piece, and make you admire it all the more.

Then there's the duh reason - "Yeah, I love that song too!"
But that's every bit as fun =)

But seriously....I think people that are drawn to others of similar musical interest are generally around the ages of 14-19, when folks are really tryting to find out who they are, and who their (hopefully temporary) clique/s is/are.

Me and my pals all like different music - overlapping on some accounts, y'know. One of my three closest friends si big-time into techno, at which I cringe and say "Why Jesus.....why?"
The second is really into ska and reggae and stuff, which to me is just....you know...."ehhh..."
The third, though, shares a lot of the same interests that I do, but with a few differences.

Then there's another good friend who loves hardcore and junk. You know, stuff I despiiiiiiiiiise. But the lot of us are still great friends, even though musically, we really aren't much alike at all. Especially not those outcasts who like rap. Eww. They're still good friends though.

I guess adhering to people who like your music and your music specifically is really for high school guys and gals who really need a big-time "identity explanation" and stuff. Why limit yourself to friends with only certain interests? The human brain works not this way, little one.

I see what you're saying...but I see what steven is saying too..Think about it in terms of Musical Theater..we love different shows...we have some similar ones, but our dream roles are all different, and that's what makes us unique too!! Then again we all love Musical Theater...haha!! Luv ya ~K

I think Steve makes a great point about how being identified by music choices is juvenial. I remember being a freshman and thinking that people who dressed a certain way, which reflected their music preferences, were people who I thought were cool and would have something in common with.

Now, I could care less how trendy my friends dress, much less how trendy their music tastes are.

But perhaps that is just a change in me...
